Tuesday, 11am - POTHOLES are blamed by a Grantham man for damage to his scooter, which he says has cost him 200 in repairs in recent weeks.Leslie Browning, of Hobart Road, claims his 50cc scooter has been in the garage twice in less than two months because of damage to its exhaust system.

Mr Browning, 55, said: "I'm finding the roads really bad. I had my scooter repaired about six weeks ago and it had to go in again last week.

"It costs 100 to get it fixed and I have to get it fixed because I rely on it to get to work at Vaculug."

Paul Coathup, assistant director for highways at Lincolnshire County Council, said maintaining Lincolnshire's road network is demanding, as it is the third largest in England and covers 5,500 miles.

He said: "We check areas as often as possible and also rely on members of the public alerting us to any problems.

"All needs are assessed on a priority basis within the available funding. The level of risk to pedestrians and motorists is taken into account and works are completed across the county accordingly."

A code of practice produced by the Department for Transport and the Local Government Authority states that the council must deal with potholes measuring 40mm in depth and 500mm across within 24 hours.

If you spot potholes or road damage, call Highways Customer Service on 01522 782070.
