Traffic chaos prevents bins being emptied

Thursday, 3.15pm - WHEELIE bins could not be emptied in Stamford Street and Victoria Street, Grantham, yesterday (Wednesday) because of the new two-way traffic system imposed in the streets.Refuse collectors from South Kesteven District Council attempted to empty the bins but their 26-tonne truck was blocking the streets as cars tried to pass in both directions.
The normally one-way streets were made two-way on Monday by contractors working on re-surfacing Springfield Road. They put up barriers blocking off the bottom of Stamford Street and one end of Walton Gardens.
Council bosses were forced to add extra collections to get the bins emptied and these will continue for the duration of the roadworks in Springfield Road, which could be up to six weeks.
Leaflets were posted through doors today telling homeowners that binmen would try to empty their bins with a smaller vehicle either early tomorrow morning or, if it still can't be done then, early on Sunday.
An SKDC spokeswoman said: "This situation is totally beyond our control and our staff have had to react to what they are experiencing in that area."
From next week, residents in the area should continue to put their bins out on Wednesdays, but if they can't be collected then more collections will be done on Friday or Sunday mornings.
