Monday, 4pm - DRIVERS using the A1 from next week are being warned to expect a month of "severe delays" as a new contraflow system comes into operation at Gonerby Moor, near Grantham. The Highways Agency has warned drivers to allow extra time for their journeys while workers remove a roundabout and create a split-level junction.

As well as the contraflow, two diversions will be in place restricting traffic wanting to leave or join the A1 at its junction with the B1174 to Great Gonerby.

Traffic wanting to travel south on the A1 from Great Gonerby will be diverted northbound to Long Bennington, where it will turn round and join the southbound carriageway.

Drivers who want to leave the A1 southbound at the B1174 junction will be sent further along the A1 to the A52 Barrowby turn-off where they will turn round, travel back to Gonerby Moor and use the new link bridge and road to join the B1174 for Great Gonerby.

Project manager Paul Tulley said the work, which is part of a 15m scheme, is necessary for the safety of road users and the workforce.

He said: "Once the contraflow begins we expect severe delays at peak travel times on the A1 at the Gonerby Moor junction and on side roads, although experience shows these delays diminish over time as people get used to the new layout.

"However, we still advise drivers to leave plenty of time for their journeys or to consider alternative routes or times of travel.

"The scheme is progressing well and the contraflow is essential to allow us to complete this phase of work."

The agency says it has fully consulted businesses based at Gonerby Moor about the restriction and to arrange signs informing people they are open as usual.

The contraflow and diversions are due to begin at 8pm on Monday and continue until Monday, March 24.
