Wednesday, 12.15pm - SMOULDERING remains at recycling plant Mid UK, in Caythorpe, are being damped down by firefighters today.The plant's domestic waste shed caught fire yesterday at around 5.45pm, and eight fire units were called.

A small fire was spotted by workers after the line had closed down for the day. They attempted to extinguish it but the fire quickly got out of hand.

Nobody was hurt and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Before the damage can be assessed, a health and safety team will need to inspect the building, which is due to take place this afternoon.

The plant is fully operational today and Mid UK spokesman Mark Ridler said it is "business as usual".

He said: "The area affected by the fire represents only 15 per cent of the business.

"We have contingency plans in place and wheelie bins from South Kesteven and North Kesteven are still coming in.

"We have been transporting waste to other sites so there has been no disruption."

During the height of the fire, smoke could be seen from miles around, but the fumes are non-hazardous according to Mr Ridler.

He said: "It was mostly paper, cardboard, wood and other domestic recyclables."
