Sunday, 9.45am - FOUR masked men wielding baseball bats raided Ancaster Post Office on Friday evening.The gang burst into the Post Office at 5.15pm and threatened postmaster Peter Hinds with crow bars.

They took the key to the safe and stole what police are calling a substantial amount of cash and stamps.

The gang then left and escaped in a car believed to have been parked outside.

Mr Hinds was later treated in hospital for an injury to his arm.

He said: "I didn't see them until one of them burst through into the area behind the counter.

"As I turned around he was stood behind me with a crow bar. A second one smashed the glass panel at the front of the counter.

"They were all shouting and screaming and that all adds to the fear.

"One of them told me to give him the key to the safe. When I couldn't find the key he took a swipe at me and hit me on the arm as I tried to protect my head.

"He found the key and he put it in the safe. One of them pushed me out of the room and a third told me to lie down. That's when I noticed the forth by the door.

"As soon as I heard them drive away I came through to where my wife was and she was already on the phone to the police.

"It was all over in less than four minutes."

My Hinds said he would be improving security at the Post Office, including installing CCTV.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the gang acting suspiciously in the area or making off in the car to contact them on 01522 532222 ot anonymously to CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
