Thursday, 12.15pm - A CHILD drowning is every parent's worst nightmare, and one mother whose son came dangerously close has a stark warning to others. A family in Great Gonerby decided to make the most of the hot weather by getting out their 18ft paddling pool, lighting up a barbecue and inviting their neighbours round.

And it was while the adults' attention slipped for a split second that one-year-old Fenton Gregorich fell into the 3ft deep water.

It was the quick actions of brothers Lee and Mikey Askew which saved his life, and mum Andrea Kavanagh says she owes them everything.

Mum-of-three Andrea, 26, of Manor Drive, said: "I saw Fenton marching about at the top of Lee's garden, and it was less than a minute later that Lee was jumping in to save him.

"He passed him to me and his lips were blue and I could see he was in shock. I was in bits crying and Lee and Mikey were shaking.

"His lips started to go black so we rushed him to hospital. The doctors said we had got him out just in time.

"I owe Lee and Mikey so much, I can't stress how grateful I am to them.

"We weren't drinking, it was just a Sunday afternoon barbecue. With this hot weather, parents will be getting their paddling pools out and I want them to see how easily things can go wrong."

Seeing Fenton face-down in the pool, panic-stricken Mikey, 26, had yelled at his brother to rescue him.

Lee, 29, said: "Everything happened in slow motion. As I tried to cross the pool I couldn't grip it, and it felt like 10 minutes had gone by before I got to him.

"There was loads of us about and we were watching the kids like hawks, so it just goes to show that in one second something horrendous can happen."
