Monday, 12.55pm - A LORRY driver with more than 30 years' experience says new technology means there is no excuse for bridge strikes.Dave Green, who drives for Alma Park-based firm S A Transport Services, uses satellite navigation software which alerts drivers when they are approaching bridges.
The screen on the satellite navigation system shows an alert detailing the height of the bridge and sounds an alarm.
The technology also allows drivers to see the heights of all the bridges along their planned route and to divert away from ones their lorries will not fit under.
Dave said: "This system takes a bit of pressure off us.
"As soon as I saw it on the market I knew I had to have it as it is just so much easier than having a map.
"It's simple and 100 per cent effective.
"If this is alerting you well in advance and you still hit the bridge, there is just no excuse for that."
The software cost Dave less than 10 and he has offered to install it for any lorry drivers in the Grantham area who have a Garmin satellite navigation system.
Last month, the Journal launched a campaign to stop lorry drivers hitting bridges in Grantham by educating them and their employers about how to avoid driving into bridges.
Grantham has three bridges in Network Rail's list of the 10 most hit in the UK every year - and we want to change that.
The bridges are in Springfield Road, Harlaxton Road and Barrowby Road.
Every time a bridge is hit, we're going to write to the company involved advising them how to stop hitting bridges and encourage readers to send in their pictures as evidence.
