Wednesday, 3.30pm - HUNDREDS of women were seen wandering through the streets of Grantham on Saturday night - and they were not pub revellers. While the most of the town slept, some 600 women popped on their trainers, specially designed t-shirts and glow bracelets and headed off on a five-mile walk to raise money for Gifts Hospice - and it is believed they raised some 24,500.

This was the second Ladies' Moonlight Walk organised by the hospice, and the number of participants trebled this year.

Senior community fund-raiser Tina Dingley said: "Such a huge amount of work went into organising this and so many people volunteered their help.

"We're absolutely thrilled beyond belief that the ladies have raised so much money. Everyone had such a good time."

The gang did a half-hour warm-up at the Meres Leisure Centre, in Trent Road, before embarking on the big walk at midnight.

Marshalled along the way, they travelled along Barrowby Gate, Barrowby Road, Manthorpe Road, around Wyndham Park, along Sandon Road, Stonebridge Road, Castlegate, Wharf Road, Harlaxton Road and then back on to Trent Road to finish at the leisure centre.

On arrival, the weary group upped their energy levels with a bacon buttie and glass of fizz, before being presented with a medal and certificate.

Tina described the atmosphere en route as "electric".

She said: "It was absolutely amazing and spirits were very high.

"It's incredible to see the community coming together like that for a good local cause, especially in this difficult climate. We had ladies of all ages taking part, from 13 to their 70s.

"They were all encouraged along the way by people shouting out of windows and cars pipping their horns."
