Wednesday, 10.55am - A WINDFARM proposed for the Vale of Belvoir has come under fire from all directions, potentially sounding its death knell.

Wednesday, 10.55am - A WINDFARM proposed for the Vale of Belvoir has come under fire from all directions, potentially sounding its death knell.County Hall blasted the scheme, near Bottesford, branding it an 'unacceptable' risk to the region's heritage while the parish council unanimously opposed the plans.

Melton Borough Council asked the county planning authority to submit its views on the site with a report objecting to it published this week.

It says: "The scale and nature of the proposed development would result in significant harm to the historic qualities of the surrounding landscape to an unacceptable degree, having an adverse impact on the setting of a number nationally important listed buildings and historic parks and gardens."

It adds: "Such harm is not outweighed by the electricity generation benefits of this particular scheme."

The 17-page document outlines all the details concerning the eight 310 ft high turbines, noting there are five scheduled monuments less than one-and-a-half miles away.

Officers said the recent ruling by a planning inquiry, rejecting a windfarm at nearby Thackson's Well farm should be considered in this case.

But it was noted the Government inspector considered a site might be found somewhere in the area.

Bottesford Parish Council voted unanimously against the project based on noise, health issues, access to the site and impact on the heritage on Monday.

Campaign group Belvoir Locals Oppose Turbines has launched a bright blue blimp to demonstrate the height of the turbines.

Spokesman Jamie Mawer said: "If the public see the blimp flying above the Vale they will have a clear idea how enormous the turbines are and how unsuitable they would be towering over Bottesford, Muston, Easthorpe and Normanton."
