Grantham DIY WI celebrates a very happy first birthday

editorial image

One Year Anniversary of DIY WI at Grantham Christian Fellowship.

A SALSA party marked the first birthday of Grantham’s youngest Women’s Institute group.

Dozens of members of the Grantham DIY WI joined together to celebrate a successful first year, and ended the party with a slice of birthday cake.

Special guest was High Sheriff of Lincolnshire Lady Sarah McCorquodale, who talked about her role and cut the cake.

The WI group prides itself on being modern and fresh.

President Debbie Young said: “For generations of women, the WI has been a bastion of the homefront, restraint and respectability, where members make jam and bake cakes as they hum along to the hymn Jerusalem.

“Instead of the usual jam-making, cake-making and flower arranging of its older cousins, the group has altogether different kinds of activities.

“DIY WI takes the best bits of traditional WI and gives them a makeover. It’s WI, but a modern version. Our reason for being is to have fun, try new stuff, make friends and live life.”

Over the past year, members have learned about bee keeping and breast cancer awareness, and held a “booby night” and beach party.
