Tuesday, 11.30am - DETERMINED Larch Close residents have succeeded in getting an open space near their homes officially designated as an area of common land.Lincolnshire County Council agreed on Monday to allow the special status to the land after a 16-month campaign led by resident Carolyn Scothern.

Carolyn began her campaign to get the land protected from development after plans were submitted to build affordable homes there.

South Kesteven District Council objected to Carolyn's proposal, but agreed to withdraw its objections on the condition she did not oppose plans to build in nearby Shaw Road.

Carolyn said: "I just wanted this day to come. I'm really pleased - I don't think it's sunk in yet.

"It was all doom and gloom 16 months ago.

"We'd like to thank everyone who has supported us."

Carolyn said much of the advice and guidance she received during her campaign came from former Labour councillor Rob Shorrock, who first suggested applying for common land status.

A committee will be established to take charge of maintaining the green.

Claire Bentley, who has helped with the campaign, said: "We want ot get a couple of benches and bins and look at getting a cricket pitch and goalposts put up."

A name will be chosen for the green by asking residents for suggestions and holding a draw to find the winner.

Residents will throw a celebration party at the end of the summer.

Anybody who can help with mowing and other maintenance on the green can contact Carolyn at: cazscothern@msn.com
