REVIEW: Amateurs delivered a fabulously funny show

Tuesday, 4.40pm - ABSOLUTELY fantastic - that is the only way to describe Grantham Dramatic Society's production of Cash on Delivery at the Guildhall last week.I was hooked from the second a mini film was projected on to the screen introducing the cast.
The opening night might have had a few falters and missed lines, but that took nothing away from the show.
Cash on Delivery was about a benefit fraudster who lost his job and decided to create some fictional lodgers and ailments to keep the secret from his wife.
But a knock on the door from a fraud inspector throws his make-believe world into turmoil.
That the cast had gotten to grips with the very complex script was incredible.
There was a crazy mix of mistaken identities, false names and made-up stories, but they didn't falter once.
And although complex, the group of talented amateurs kept the story flowing so well that what could have been very difficult to follow was, in fact, very easy.
I was particularly impressed by Chris Dakin, who was very believable as lead character Eric.
Helen Pack, a newcomer to the dramatic society, was equally as good as Eric's snappy wife Linda.
Her fears that her hubby is a cross-dresser turn her into an emotional wreck, which she performed very well.
Another newcomer was Paul Meakin, whose one-liners were always on the mark and coupled with just the right expression to throw the audience into a fit of giggles.
Kevin O'Neill portrayed Eric's slightly cheeky and ditzy Uncle George with flair.
When 'knocked out' in the melee, he managed to lie still without a sound for the best part of 15 minutes before being shoved in the window seat.
Sadly, there were a few empty seats in the theatre, but the roar of applause during the curtain call was phenomenal.
If I hadn't made other plans, I would certainly have watched the show again. It was thoroughly funny and enjoyable and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.
