Funds for sensory garden in pipeline
A horse chestnut tree in Wyndham Park is chopped to 3m tall.
WORKMEN armed with chainsaws have chopped away the branches of a diseased tree in Wyndham Park, Grantham.
It is hoped that the horse chestnut tree will be transformed into the centre-piece of a new sensory garden on parkland by the A607 junction with Belton Lane.
They are the plans of the Wyndham Park Forum, but they will not become a reality unless a bid for funding from the Community Spaces fund, an award partner of the Big Lottery Fund, is successful.
Forum secretary Elizabeth Bowskill said members will find out next week.
If successful, the tree, which now stands at three metres tall, will be sculpted with a Sir Isaac Newton theme with seating around its base.
Existing raised flower beds will be flattened and replanted with colourful, scented flowers such as lavendar and roses, and new seating, a pergola and an information board will be added.
If given the go-ahead, it is hoped the project will be completed by the end of July.
Forum members came up with the idea of a sensory garden with a tree sculpture when told by South Kesteven District Council that the tree was diseased and must be felled.
Children from neighbouring schools will be invited to help with the project, which has gained the support of the South Lincolnshire Blind Society, the Alzheimer’s Society and the Civic Society, among other groups.
