The coffin of firefighter Steve Woods, 47, was carried through Grantham this afternoon on a vintage fire engine.

Steve, a retained fireman in Grantham for 18 years, died of a brain haemorrhage on September 12. He was a father of five children and grandfather of three. His second wife, Samantha, 27, is expecting their second child.

Today, six of Steve’s colleagues from Grantham Fire Station and an officer in charge accompanied his coffin on the vintage engine, which dates from the 1930s, as it made its way from Robert Holland Funeral Directors in St Catherine’s Road to St Wulfram’s Church for the funeral service.

Steve’s coffin was draped with the Union Jack as he was a former member of the Armed Forces. There was also a Guard of Honour, made up of fellow firefighters, at St Wulfram’s where a large congregation turned out for the service.

Steve’s coffin was then taken on the vintage engine to Grantham Crematorium where a smaller gathering was due to attend his burial.

As well as a retained firefighter, Steve, who lived in Coles Way, was also an RAF firefighter at Cranwell and recently worked as a training officer with London Fire Brigade.

He took part in Operation Florian which provided training and equipment to firefighters abroad. Steve would drive old engines across the Continent to be donated to foreign fire services and he trained firefighters in Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo.

Retained firefighter Mark Brammer, a colleague and friend of Mr Woods for 15 years, said he was a big family man and liked his motorcycles. Mr Brammer added: “He was a big, big family man and a great dad. He was an adventurous sort of guy, always laughing and joking. ‘A free spirit’ would sum him up.”

Donations for the Fire Fighters Charity can be sent to Robert Holland, 14 St Catherine’s Road, Grantham NG31 6TS.
