ONE of Grantham’s largest employers is launching a recruitment drive – and needs staff fast.
Quality Furniture Company, of Alma Park Road, needs 50 staff to service a major new contract from national furniture chain DFS.
The firm, which already employs around 220 people, has a wide range of vacancies from manufacturing operatives and material handlers to office and administrative roles.
Vernon Goldberg, managing director, said: “We were approached by DFS a little while ago to design a new range of trend-led, compact sofas aimed at people with smaller living spaces, wanting to express their individuality through design and available on shorter lead times.”
The local firm launched the new range called The Capsule Collection in seven of DFS’ 89 stores on a trial basis six weeks ago. Initial customer response has been so positive, DFS wants to roll-out the concept to its remaining stores as quickly as possible.
QFC estimates it will need to produce more than 2,000 additional sofas every week to meet the demand.
At the moment, the company, the biggest supplier of sofas to Argos and Tesco and one of the biggest to Next and Laura Ashley, manufactures and dispatches around 3,500 sofas per week, often supplying stores within seven days – the industry standard lead-in time is 16 weeks.
Operations director David Bramwell commented: “We have grown strongly over the last five years by offering customers stylish products which it can supply to its retail customers on very short lead times, an innovation to an industry which is notorious for making people wait a long time between ordering and receiving their products.”
Earlier this year, QFC invested £350,000 in new equipment, including £170,000 on a beam saw, for the wood mill area of its factory to bring more of the manufacturing process to Grantham from Eastern Europe.
