Burglary victim gets guard dog to protect his home

A FATHER of two who was burgled recently has taken an unusual step to increase the security at his house.

Simon Brewin-Smith, of Easton, did not just buy a burglar alarm but also a Rottweiler as a guard dog.

Simon said: “It looks the part and he barks when strangers come.

“I’m going to take more measures to protect the property with the dog and the alarm and new security gates. The police have also told me to put smart water on everything. That’s all you can do.”

The thieves kicked down the front door of Simon’s house and stole more than £7,000 worth of property while he was away for the weekend visiting his daughter at the end of February.

He said: “It’s very upsetting. The doors were left open and things were strewn around all over the floor.

“My son and daughter are very upset about it.”

The thieves went around the whole house emptying drawers and taking things they deemed to be valuable.

Simon added: “The most upsetting thing is that someone has been in your house. Things can be replaced.

“When I went into my bedroom there were things all over the floor. All my clothes that were washed and ironed and put away when I left. I had to wash all the stuff to get rid of them.

“It’s not very nice. It took years to collect and buy some of these things but the police have been very good.”

Simon has had meetings with people from the crime prevention team and he has taken their advice about how to keep his home safe in the future.

Police spokesman James Newall said: “The house was ransacked and a large amount of property was taken.”

Among the items stolen were a Wii and £200 worth of games, an Apple iMac computer, Daytona motor bike boots, Dainese leathers, Furygan leathers, a racing bike, two 32 inch televisions and one 42 inch television.

They also took sentimental items that cannot be replaced.
