Two breweries have won major awards at the National Beer Competition.

Oldershaw’s Great Expectations and Brewsters Helles lager both took the Silver awards in the Best Bitter and Keg Beer categories respectively when the winners were announced in Sheffield last week. They were two of just a handful of beers to win national awards out of about 1,400 that were entered at the initial stage of the competition.

Sara Barton, of Brewsters, said, “We are very proud of our beers and delighted to win this Award, ahead of some of the finest brewers in the country. We’re grateful to everyone at our brewery, and to the many people locally who have helped us to brew great beer. We promise to continue doing so for many more years, and hope that this award will help us to bring our beers to many more people.”

Kathy Britton, of Oldershaw Brewery, said “We are so excited to win this national award. Oldershaw beers have won a number of awards over the years, but since taking over the brewery three years ago this is the first of our new recipes to win – and to come second in the national competition of all breweries is just fantastic.”

The national competition is run by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA). Its chief executive, Julian Grocock, said: “The number of smaller brewers has grown rapidly over recent years, so there are clearly more beers competing for the top prizes. To progress to the national finals is impressive in itself, and to then come through to win silver in the national awards is a real achievement. Our hearty congratulations go to both Oldershaws and Brewsters. Grantham is lucky to have such great breweries.”

All Bronze, Silver and Gold award winners received their certificates and trophies on stage at BeerX from Neil Morrissey.
