At the annual meeting in Boston of the United Lincolnshire Hospital NHS Trust it was ‘confirmed’ by chief executive Jane Lewington that a new day surgery COULD be built “near the site of the old Grantham hospital” which they plan to demolish and replace by a temporary car park.

However, the trust has not said when the day surgery unit would be built or how much it would cost - so we can only guess how much honest, professional planning and accurate accounting has gone into this whole exercise.

The old (1874) hospital, despite deliberate neglect over recent years, is still a very attractive building which surely has enourmous potential for profitable refurbishment and residential conversion - as has been successfully done elsewhere on other NHS premises.

If bulldozing such a pleasing piece of architecture is the most creative thought to emerge from the combined brains of the ULHT executives, need we wonder why our NHS continues to have so many problems?
