A Grantham man is taking on a three-day cycle challenge from London to Paris to raise vital funds for Diabetes UK.

Lee Turner, 24, of Dysart Road, is taking on the challenge because he and six members of his family have Type 1 diabetes.

Lee, a manager at the Vodafone Call Centre in Newark, will be cycling as part of a team of 25 that will set off on Friday, September 5. The route starts in the streets of London and will see the cyclists pedalling through the Kent countryside and boarding a ferry from Dover to Calais before cycling over 120 miles through the Seine Valley to the French capital.

Lee said: “Diabetes runs in our family. My mum, brother, dad, great Auntie, nan and grandad all have Type 1. Diabetes UK has given me a lot of support over the last 20 years and now I feel it’s my time to give something back to them. ”

People with Type 1 diabetes have to manage their blood glucose levels through taking daily insulin doses. No one knows what causes the condition, but it’s not to do with being overweight and it isn’t currently preventable. Cycling, like other forms of physical activity, can help people with diabetes manage their condition more effectively.

Lee was diagnosed when he was just three years old and for many years used injections to control his diabetes but last September he switched to an insulin pump which is attached to the body and releases insulin straight into the body throughout the day.

He said: “I grew up with diabetes and have always had it so don’t know anything different. I’ve always been quite sporty. I don’t let it stop me doing anything.”

Clare Coles, Regional Fundraiser for Diabetes UK in the Midlands, said: “This is a really good fundraising effort from Lee, as cycling the 200 mile distance from London to Paris in just three days takes a high level of fitness and determination. We are really grateful for his effort because the money raised will help us to make life better for the 3.8 million people in the UK with diabetes and the many millions at high risk of Type 2 diabetes.”
