A surprise lunch was laid on at Belton Park Golf Club to celebrate the retirement of Lorne Stewart’s branch manager of more than 30 years.
Tom Whittaker began working for the company under his father in March 1978. He initially worked out of an office run from a small Portakabin on the old BMARC site with Terry Fahy, Pat Gascoyne and David Hayre.
The office moved to Vine Street in Grantham in 1979 where Tom superseded his father as branch manager. The company moved to larger premises in 1989 before settling at Autumn Park.
A spokesman for the company said: “Under Mr Whittaker’s control, the branch has successfully completed a number of technically demanding and logistically difficult projects both in the UK and overseas, including the Falklands, Ascension, Canada, Bruggen, Cyprus and Gibraltar.
“We held a surprise lunch for Tom at Belton Park Golf Club, where he is a prominent member. To celebrate his retirement we presented him with a new iPad bought with generous donations from friends and colleagues. The aim is to bring him into the world of technology with a firm warning that they do not bounce very well if thrown at a wall if it doesn’t do what he wants!”
The event was attended by Tom’s wife, Mary and daughter, Victoria, as well as current and past colleagues and friends.
