Have your say

People have reacted angrily to news of proposals to temporarily close Grantham’s accident and emergency unit at night for three months.

Readers have taken to the Journal’s social media sites to voice their anger at the plan revealed today (Wednesday).

Here’s what some had to say:

* Tami Gilbert Brown: So sad....

* Karl Raven: This is the way it will be made to a treatment centre. You call 111 n the nearest treatment centre is grantham hospital they say. So its obvious what the plans are. They’re saying this obviously as a way round it.

* Darren Arnold: So what happens if we have a serious accident out of hours?..this like most things in this town and nation is utter garbage and it’s shameful. An A&E should be running 24 hours. If you have a heart attack out of hours then we are f***ed basically.

* Nina Preston: Over the last seven years I have spent a lot of hours in A&E with my late parents. This was in Grantham and in Lincoln and amount of time wasters that go in through the doors. You know who they are, the first ones at the vending machines and on their mobiles and complaining about waiting!

* Stephen Swart: One word: Ridiculous! Two words: Absolutely Pathetic! Three words: What A Joke. Just sums up the state of the NHS.

* Danny Gwyther: JOKE

* Tracey Storey: How ridiculous, you keep increasing the size of the town but decreasing the size of our hospital. How about you decrease the size of your chief executives, etc, and use the stupid amounts of money you pay them every year to reinvest into our hospital. Like they saying says, too many (overpaid) chiefs and not enough Indians!!!

* Benjamin Moorcroft: This is what happenes when any Tom, Dick and Harry stretch it to breaking point by using it for everything other than life-threatening emergencies.

* Jo Foister: So the town grows and the hospital and schools suffer. Bl***y government needs to get its priorities right and spend the money where it’s needed, not in the pockets of big chiefs (like most companies the workers should get the money not the bosses).

* Patrick Mattison: If you close the A&E then under health response times you will have to close the A1, the train lines, the Army camp will have to shut and the population will have to be reduced.

* Karen Guy: The nearest A&E would be Peterborough, Lincoln or Nottingham! Wouldn’t fancy my chances getting to any of those places in time in an absolute emergency.

* Paul Bennett: Ridiculous! Grantham grows and yet the health services shrink??!

* Steve Philpot: They won’t be happy until they shut it down.

* Louise Smith: They have wanted to do this for years, if they close it temporary it will never go back to full opening times.

* Angela Peatman: Lincoln can’t cope with any more people!!!! Their poor staff are stretched to the limit as it is.

* Tracey Measures: Nearly every minor bump and scrape is now...”taken to QMC with minor injuries”.....no wonder it’s going, they know the saying “use it or lose it” !!

* Kevin Raynor: It’s a sad day for Grantham and the nhs as the website states 365 days 24/7. But no more .... It’s just the beginning.

* Sarah Ball: I currently live in Melton Mowbray who do not have an A&E, my nearest is Grantham, leaving then my only option to be Leicester. I am defaulting to bubble wrap, hard hat and hi vis so I don’t get ill or injured!

* Maggie Haycox: When I was in Boston hospital a year ago the story going round was that Grantham Hospital was to be closed completely. This is just ridiculous, we haven’t even got a walk in centre. When you phone the doctor they often say ‘go to A and E because we cant treat you in surgery’. How are you suppossed to get to outlying hospitals if you haven’t transport? An emergency needs treating asap whatever time of day it is.

* Natalie Fahy: I went to A&E here recently and shouldn’t have bothered. I only had to wait an hour for an ambulance transfer to Lincoln anyway. I should’ve just gone there in the first place. It’s quite clear they’re running it down.

* Carole Anne Troops: Brilliant, build more houses and then close the hospital.

* Christopher Church: No way, this is putting lives at risk

* Simon Hayes: I had a 4 hour wait on Monday, I’m happier to wait than find a way to Lincoln at 8.30pm

* Diane Rivers: This shouldn’t be happening!!!

* Sally-Anne Bullock: This is utterly ridiculous, the town is still growing fast and needs this facility, but unfortunately it won’t matter what we say as I think this has been happening behind closed doors for a long time now, sad days for Grantham

* Alison Marie Robson: Awful news. But they’re saying the reason is they don’t have enough doctors to stay open overnight?!

* Ellen Sheppard: Grantham is expanding so it is crazy what is happening to our A & E

* Emma Roberts: Come on councillors, it’s time to take action, and rather than just saying how ridiculous it is on social media we the public need to make actual noise. Email your mp and councillor folks. Let’s get marching!

* Julie Broughton: What and they are not put in danger when having to wait 3 hours for an ambulance.......what about the people that don’t have transport to get them to Lincoln & Boston!!! They are letting Grantham hospital fall apart any way prob to knock down & build more houses!!!!

* Lisa Whitehead: Makes my blood boil!!!!

* Kelly Anne Oswin: I moved from a town with 3 hospitals so this just seems insane. If you don’t drive the logistics and cost of visiting a loved one who has to have a stay in another town’s hospital is quite worrying.

* Teresa Wright: WHAT, totally and utterly ridiculous, Grantham is getting bigger along with villages also. Totally ridiculous.

* Steven Ashwin: Surely some of the £350m per week will save it

* Jayne Goodwin: What a stupid thing to do, Grantham grows and they decide to close the local A&E which has saved many lives due to the location! They’ve been trying to close for many years!

* Kate Bennett: I’m fine with travelling to a hospital for routine treatment or an operation. I’ve had to travel to Nottingham for about 20 years. However it’s unacceptable to limit or close the A&E of a town the size of Grantham and growing. Not to mention we have the A1, A52 and East Coast mainline running through town. Lincolnshire roads have one of the highest number of RTAs too! So cut services to routine stuff but the A&E is essential!

* Subba Shrestha: Really bad news for Grantham people

* Daniel Kingston: That’s surely just going to be a strain on the ambulance service. I can’t drive ATM so I’m more likely to have to call 999 for a minor emergency rather than walk or get a taxi to Grantham A&E.

* Catherine Clark: I will march, sit-in, protest and do everything I can to prevent this. It’s criminal.

* Stephanie Lee: Disgusting!!!

* James Fox: Working class Tory town surprised at cuts to services....... irony anyone?? You can’t vote in an austerity government and then be shocked when that austerity hits close to home.

* Rhiannon Read: No it should stay open, every time I been in its been packed its there for a reason and people need it x

* Kelly Harvey: Absolutley mental

* Maureen Johnson: Who will be held responsible when lives are lost and how will Lincoln and Boston cope with the influx of casualties if there is a major accident in Grantham or the surrounding district? We need our A&E department, it is a vital part of our growing town, it is a disgrace what is happening to our hospital, I hope the powers that be reconsider but I won’t hold my breath.

* Michael Woollatt: When are people going to realise the powers that be are out to close grantham hospital for good.

* Adrian Mapletoft: This is the start of the end to the n.h.s as it doesn’t work anymore. so people will have medical insurance like other countries

* Thomas Lyons Napier: What will the “late night market square customer’s” tink of tat.

* Roberta Craigen: Same old story everywhere, but Bangor haven’t given up yet. Our community hospital followed on from a&e, now no facilities. Terrible.

* Sheila Rimmington: It is disgusting we need to do something now they are building more houses but no hospital, we need to sort it now.
