Second protest vigil to be held tonight against Grantham A&E closure
A second vigil is to be held tonight (Wednesday) in protest at a decision to close the A&E department at Grantham Hospital.
A well-attended rally was held outside the hospital entrance on Manthorpe Road from noon on Saturday.
And SOS Grantham Hospital members have organised a second protest event tonight, to coincide with the start of the first overnight closure of the A&E department, from 6.30pm.
One of those attending, town resident Debbie Grinnell, said: “We want as many people to come along as possible tonight and to stay until midnight.
“We are asking people to bring torches and to keep up the vigil. We have to do something about this. There will also be petition forms for people to sign.”
The United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT) says the move to close A&E services at Grantham will boost the number of doctors at the trust’s other two A&E centres, at Lincoln County and Boston Pilgrim Hospitals.
Efforts to recruit replacement staff are to be redoubled, they say, during the three months of the closure.
The A&E department is now closed at Grantham every day from 6.30pm until 9am.
