IF you have missed the familiar sight of a tandem bicycle hanging above Grantham’s Cycle Sport, pine no longer.
Another vintage tandem has taken the place of the yellow bike in London Road which was part of the furniture in the town for more than 20 years.
The original tandem was hit by a lorry in December, forcing shop manager Sue Power (pictured) to take it down due to safety concerns.
Several curious people ventured into the shop in the following weeks to ask where it had gone, particularly as Santa perches atop it each year at Christmas time.
Although the original bike itself was beyond repair, staff were eager to replace it and bought a vintage model off internet auction site eBay.
Sue said: “We put it back up last Wednesday. It was in the shop for a good 10 days and nine out of 10 customers who came in said it was nice to see it and to get it up as soon as possible.”
Two local businessmen lent a helping hand in restoring the bike, free of charge. Mascot Fabrications, in Caythorpe, gave it a powder coating, while Grantham-based Construction Action fitted it to the wall.
And to avoid a repeat of a lorry hit, Sue has plastered high-visibility stickers on the bike.
The original tandem had hung above the shop for more than two decades, so Sue had hoped it could be repaired and put back in its rightful place. But she decided to err on the side of caution and put the old bike into retirement.
Sue said: “A gentleman came in after reading about what had happened in the Journal and offered to repair it free of charge, but we were worried about health and safety issues in that it could have become weakened and come down again.”
