A KIND couple have opened a shop to raise money for a charity which supports injured servicemen and their families.
Jeff and Anne Davis work up to 60 hours a week in their ‘Helping Our Heroes’ shop, in New Beacon Road, Grantham. But it is all worthwhile when they count up the money they have raised for Help for Heroes.
From opening up the shop in February to the end of April, they made £3,800 for the charity, and they believe they have raised a further £1,600 in the month of May.
Jeff, 64, who was a Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers corporal for 12 years, said: “We’re really chuffed to bits with the way it’s gone. We couldn’t be happier.
“It’s a double whammy for us because we get a lot of feedback from the local community saying they love our outlet. We feel part of the community now.”
What has become a full-time venture for the couple all stemmed from what was supposed to have been a single fund-raiser.
Afterwards, finding they still had items to sell, the couple decided to set up at a Bottesford car boot sale. But when other sellers realised they were raising money for Help for Heroes, they donated left-over items - and Jeff and Anne left with more than they arrived with.
They progressed on to selling from their home in Harrowby Lane, and are now proud to run a very successful shop.
Jeff said: “It has opened our eyes to what people have to go through when they’ve got family in Afghanistan.
“We’ve got to meet some of the soldiers and we know what they go through.”
The unit they rent has been fully refurbished with all the work carried out by themselves. Plus, a number of local businesses helped with signage shelves and other start-up materials.
The lease runs for three years.
Jeff and Anne would be grateful for any high quality items to sell. Jeff can be reached on 07731 189727.
