Many readers will have known John as a teacher of mathematics - a subject which, we are told, he made enjoyable for all concerned; indeed, there have already been many tributes on Facebook from his former pupils. Much more, though, he was a great wit and raconteur. His many stories include adventures while working in Saudi Arabia for 10 years and while sailing (he had his own yacht).

John and his wife, Carole, were keen historians, especially of the Peninsula Wars, and we enjoyed many battle-themed dinners with them and other friends.

Most of all, however, JD was an all-round good egg and a wonderful friend. We shall miss him very much. Our thoughts are with Carole and their grown children and their families.

Au revoir, John.
