07/12/07 - Not a case of believe as I do
I CAN accept being accused of something of which I am guilty but, in the interests of fairness and right of reply, should like to respond when falsely accused.
I CAN accept being accused of something of which I am guilty but, in the interests of fairness and right of reply, should like to respond when falsely accused. The letter from "Open-minded" (Journal, Nov 23) infers that my original comment on Father Collard's article on prayers for the dead included the words "stupid", "psychotic" and "dangerous" with regard to those who hold such belief.
It did no such thing, and any objective reading of my letter will show that I sought to give no offence to those who hold different beliefs to my own. It is, therefore, erroneous to assert that I insist that everyone believes as I do.
While the letter from Mr Cole in the same edition of your newspaper is more moderate, it nevertheless contains a further inaccuracy in suggesting that we in the Seventh-day Adventist Church preach a dead Gospel, or one with a "turn or burn attitude" (Mr Cole's words).
Quite the contrary. It is not my practice to rubbish those who hold different understandings of Scripture.
Challenge them, yes; be offensive, certainly not.
How could it possibly be that the Christ in my heart would not get along with the Christ in the heart of either "Open-minded", or Mr Cole?
