£250 award for help catching Grantham drug dealer
A MOPED rider, who was dealing drugs, was given 300 hours of unpaid work by a judge at Lincoln Crown Court on Friday after a passer-by noticed him acting suspiciously.
Simon Brewin, 22, formerly of Grantham, admitted a charge of possession of crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply.
He was caught after a man spotted the moped rider acting suspiciously near to an old dance school in Mount Street, off Barrowby Road, in Grantham.
The passer-by noted the same rider returning later the same day, apparently either collecting or dropping off an item at a pile of rubble.
He went to check out the site and discovered a plastic bag containing drugs.
Police subsequently kept the area under observation and when the moped rider returned he was arrested.
Mark Watson, prosecuting, said Brewin, the moped rider, had three wraps of heroin and one wrap of crack cocaine on him when he was searched.
The stash hidden in the rubble contained a further 23 wraps of heroin and 13 wraps of crack. The drugs had an estimated street value of £700.
Judge Michael Heath praised the vigilance of the informant and made a £250 reward from public funds in recognition of his role in bringing Brewin to justice.
Chris Jeyes, defending, said Brewin’s role was to store the drugs for their owner and act as courier.
He said Brewin had got himself into financial difficulties and foolishly took up an offer to assist a dealer.
He said: “It is something he now bitterly regrets.”
Mr Jeyes said Brewin has since cut his ties with Grantham and moved to start a new life in Lincoln. He now has a job and is working hard.
Brewin was given a community order with 300 hours of unpaid work.
