NINETY saplings were planted in Bingham on Sunday by a group of enthusiastic Vale of Belvoir Lions and their families.

The volunteers gathered at the Wallenfels play area, dressed for the elements and armed with spades.

The saplings were provided by the Woodland Trust to help celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The planting is also in memory of a founder member of the Lions club, William Brown of Bingham, who died last year.

Hawthorn, blackthorn, birch, hazel and rowan were chosen to benefit both the local community and wildlife, and were planted on three chosen areas in the play area.

Additional sites are also being identified for the planting of a further 15 oak saplings, including one especially grown from the seed of a tree from a Royal estates.

Lions president John Ronan said: “It’s incredible to think that in just five years, our trees will be as tall as us.”
