MP Nick Boles described Grantham as a “fantastic place to die” at a ceremony to officially open the new Grantham Hospice building on Friday.

Mr Boles, MP for Grantham and Stamford, gave a speech to mark the official opening of the new hospice building in Barrowby Road.

Mr Boles said: “Grantham has so much going for it and it just doesn’t sometimes believe it enough and it certainly doesn’t tell people enough.

“A lot of the time I would say Grantham is a fantastic place to live because of its amazing schools, if you have got children, because of the fantastic countryside around it and its superb transport links.

“But what we can now recognise, thanks to St Barnabas and Gifts, is that Grantham is a fantastic place to die.”

Mr Boles added that the new hospice facility will be a reassuring presence for many in the town.

He said: “We all have someone that’s thinking about that door they are about to walk through and wondering how it will be for them and it is reassuring to know that if you are approaching the end of your life, whatever age, that in Grantham there is this fantastic place to come and to benefit from.”

The day therapy service at the hospice began in September of last year and since then staff have supported 248 patients and had more than 2,000 appointments.

Noel Baumber, one of the founders of GIFTS Hospice said: “I’m very proud of Grantham Hospice. This is an absolutely first class centre for ‘end of life’ care in South Lincolnshire.

“It is the base for the Hospice at Home team too. It has never been busier and I hope everyone will continue to support our efforts, call in at the Welby Street Hospice shop or come to a coffee morning on Barrowby Road and see what a purposeful and delightful place the charity has created.”
