Bookkeeper from village near Grantham admits stealing £42k from clients

A bookkeeper who stole over £42,000 from clients’ accounts because she was in money trouble must wait to hear her fate.

Angela Watt, 49, of Main Street, Little Humby, pleaded guilty to 10 specimen charges of false accounting when she appeared at Cambridge Crown Court last Friday.

The offences are alleged to have happened in Horseheath, Cambridgeshire, between December 19, 2008, and May 28, 2011.

She is charged with falsifying computerised accounting systems by omitting that payments had been made to various bank accounts. The sums range from £1,450 to £3,112.

The 10 specimen offences total £19,340 but prosecutor David Matthew said the total involved in 33 separate transactions was just over £42,000.

Watt’s counsel, Mark Shelley, said Watt had no previous convictions. She was a bookkeeper and got into financial difficulties herself and took money from firms she was contracted to.

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth adjourned sentence for an all options report, which might include prison.

The Crown Prosecution Service is also seeking to confiscate her assets to repay what she took.
