Books on display in Grantham from the St Wulfram’s Church Tudor library
Gravity Fields: Pages from the past at St Wulfram's Church.
A SELECTION of books from the St Wulfram’s Church Tudor library that Isaac Newton himself may have used as a King’s School pupil were put on display.
Derek Jackson, on hand to help visitors, explained that many of these books were from the first few years of a new era thanks to Gutenberg’s printing press, developed in 1436.
Among the interesting collection was a copy of a book Christopher Columbus would have had used to help sail to the West Indies in his attempt to reach Asia and an encyclopedia on the animal kingdom written between 1551 and 1558 including illustrations of animals such as the rhinoceros.
The exhibition was arranged by The Friends of St Wulfram’s with advice from the British Library. Prior to Gravity Fields, the books had been kept in St Wulfram’s chained Francis Trigge library.
Stuart Kent is pictured browsing the books.
