One minute Charlie Oswin is powdering the noses of the cast of Emmerdale, the next she is fixing wigs for the cast of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Make-up artist to the stars Charlie, 26, has built up quite a name for herself, schmoozing with the likes of Queen legend Brian May, singer Michael Ball and Steps member H.
Even as a teenager she was building on her passion for style, launching a professional make-up service while studying at college.
Charlie, of Lilley Street in Long Bennington, studied media, make-up and hair at York College, gaining work experience on television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, My Parents are Aliens and Any Dream Will Do.
Gaining a reputation, she soon found herself in demand to work on TV shows like Emmerdale and My Spy Family, and period dramas such as The Young Victorian and Brideshead Revisited.
Charlie said: “After college I took a job working for ‘Powder Room’ as a make-up artist. It was here that I met established make-up artist and wigs mistress Kim Freeland, who was so impressed she hired me as a wigs assistant to work on projects for Northern Ballet, Opera North and the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
“After a spell at the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre, I went on to work as a wigs assistant on the UK tour of ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, where I got to work with stars such as Ian Watkins (H from Steps), Aled Jones and Matt Baker.”
After impressing her bosses, Charlie was promoted to the role of deputy head of wigs and make-up on the West End production of Hairspray, where she went on to become the personal wigs and make-up assistant to Michael Ball, who played the role of Edna Turnblad.
Charlie puts her success in the industry down to her “passion, artistic flair and strong work ethic”. It is these attributes which have seen her go on to work on television shows such as Hollyoaks and George Gently, while her theatre work has included Beauty and the Beast and We Will Rock You, a tribute to the band Queen.
On meeting the Queen guitarist, she said: “I was very blessed to meet Brian May.”
And as if all this was not enough, Charlie continues to run her own beauty business and also a Weight Watchers group as leader.
She said: “I’ve worked really hard to get where I am, doing lots of work experience and having to do lots of part-time jobs to support me financially.
“I’ve met some amazing people and I’ve always had support from friends and family.”
