A new shop and donation centre for children’s charity Barnardo’s is opening on London Road today, which intends to change the way people donate their goods.
Barnardo’s believe this to be Lincolnshire’s first donation centre which encourages supporters to ‘drop and shop’, by having both a place for visitors to deliver their items as well as a traditional store to the front of the building.
It replaces the former Blockbuster store between 30-40 London Road, and will have easy access and plenty of free parking to save those wishing to donate from struggling down the street with bags and boxes.
Barnardo’s area business manager Glen Hall said: “This is a fantastic concept which has already proved to be very popular in other parts of the UK.
“It makes shopping and donating so much easier for all of our local supporters – there is no need to search for a parking space and then carry everything down the road.
“They simply pull up at the door and transfer everything from their boot, with help at hand if needed.”
The ‘open plan’ layout of the building will also enable donors to see volunteers at work sorting goods into 34 large bays, ready for them to be sent to the most appropriate shop depending on which items customers prefer at each store.
“We sort the stock and arrange distribution to our network of shops where the items are resold to support our work with vulnerable and disadvantaged children,” added Glen.
Barnardo’s existing High Street shop will remain open, while the new donation centre situated near Sainsbury’s will be open Monday-Saturday from 9am-6pm, and Sundays from 10am-4pm, welcoming donations of good quality items including clothing, books, toys, games, DVDs, CDs, homeware and accessories.
As a result of the additional centre four new jobs are being created, and once the full-time team is in place there will be an event at the end of the month to celebrate its launch.
The team is also keen to hear from potential volunteers and is asking those interested in helping to contact Glen on 07795 221711.
