CLUB OF THE WEEK: Grantham Round Table
The Grantham Round Table on their recent trip to Lokeren in Belgium.
ROUND Tablers from across the continent, including the Grantham branch, enjoyed a surreal meeting in Lokeren, Belgium at the weekend.
The highlight was undoubtedly the Saturday night when the tablers got stuck into a medieval banquet with the Grantham contingent looking resplendent as the knights of St George.
With the Grantham Arms emblazened on their shields, they were hard to ignore.
The meeting saw 28 Round Table groups across European nations descend on Lokeren.
Round Table was born in 1927 in the wake of a famous speech from the Prince of Wales, who said: “The young business and professional men of this country must get together round the table, adopt methods that have proved so sound in the past, adapt them to the changing needs of the times and wherever possible, improve them.”
Since then it has evolved into a huge organisation with around 4,000 members in the UK alone.
Any male between 18 and 45 can join up and enjoy the wealth of experiences on offer.
With sporting activities, visits and dinners, the organisation offers something for every taste.
John Whaler, member for 15 years of the Grantham and District 307 group, said: “People from all occupations are welcomed, Round Table offers a chance to meet new friends and expand your social life, it’s especially good for people that are new to an area.
“You’ll get to do things you perhaps wouldn’t do individually such as water rafting.
“And you’ll make new friends, many of whom will be friends for life.”
2013’s Euromeeting will be hosted by the Yarborough branch, based near Grimsby.
The Grantham branch has 14 members and meets at various venues on every second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
Over 25s pay £8.29 per month plus the cost of local activities. For under 25s the first two years of membership are free, so only the cost of local activities.
