Coast to Coast cycle ride will be a challenge for Grantham Journal chief reporter Marie and her dad Mick

AFTER writing many stories about the fund-raising efforts of others, Journal chief reporter Marie Baker will ride 170 miles alongside her father, Mick, both raising money for their chosen charities.
BOTH my dad and I are pretty new at this cycling lark so taking on the Coast to Coast ride is quite a challenge.
It was earlier this year that my dad, Mick Baker from Long Bennington, decided to join a couple of friends already planning to ride the route, entitled Way of the Roses. Approaching my 30th birthday in December, I asked to join them as something special to mark my 29th year.
Since deciding to embark upon the 170-mile ride from Morecambe on the west coast to Bridlington on the east, we’ve been growing our collection of cycling paraphernalia and clocking up as many miles as possible.
We’ve each chosen charities to support through sponsorship. I’ve decided to support two great local causes - a Grantham LIVES group, the voluntary life-saving organisation, and Grantham Rescue of Cats and Kittens.
LIVES first responders do an incredible job, arriving on the scene of a medical emergency prior to paramedics to keep patients alive and comfortable. Meanwhile, Cath Rowson works tirelessly to keep Grantham ROCK running, relying on donations to keep the cats in her care warm, fed and vet-checked.
Beaumont House Community Hospice in Newark is the charity of choice for my dad.
He said: “A friend of mine was cared for at Beaumont House so this is a charity close to my heart.
“Training was tough at first, but I’ve been tackling some steep hills in preparation and feel ready for the challenge.
“Knowing I’m raising money for Beaumont House will spur me on to reach the finish line.”
