Court: Man drank vodka and slept in his car
Sleeping in his car after splitting from his wife almost cost a man his driving licence.
Brian Kelly of Ivatt Court in Grantham was spending his third night sleeping in his car in a lay-by in Pit Lane, Great Ponton, when he was spotted by the police.
Kelly had left his headlights on and had the engine running when a police officer approached the car.
Kate Hartley, prosecuting, said the officer was knocking on the window of the car for about two minutes until Kelly, who was “slumped over the steering wheel” finally came to.
The officer immediately noted the smell of alcohol on Kelly’s breath and the 47-year-old admitted he had been drinking vodka. Kelly, who admitted a charge of being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle, was found to be almost three times the drink-drive limit.
Chris Pye-Smith, defending, said Kelly would lose his job if he were banned from driving. He added: “He had no intention of driving his car that night.”
The court was told Kelly is now living with his daughter in Grantham.
Kelly was fined £420 and ordered to pay £42 in costs and an £85 surcharge. There will also be 10 points put on his licence.
Chair of magistrates Jane Tidswell said: “It means you are going to have to drive exceptionally carefully.”
