Plans to demolish the old stone-built part of Grantham Hospital and replace it with a car park are being considered as a ‘likely option’ by United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
The facilities team are looking into demolishing the building which dates back to 1874, although no planning application has been submitted yet.
County councillor Ray Wootten has expressed his opposition to the proposal, and said: “To do this is unacceptable, the hospital is part of our heritage.
“This hospital was built with contributions from Grantham residents and many paid four old pence a week to look after their health.”
Despite previous applications made by Coun Wootten and others to English Heritage the building is not listed.
“To knock the old hospital down and have a car park is down-sizing by the back door,” added Coun Wootten.
