Denton gets ready for its popular street market

Denton Street Market 2013

Denton Street Market 2013

The popular Denton Street Market is expected to draw in thousands of visitors as usual on Bank Holiday Monday.

The village is set to hold its annual street market on Monday, May 5, between 10am and 4pm.

Attracting crowds of thousands, the market draws together a colourful blend of village stalls, childrens’ entertainment, charity stalls, bric a brac, street traders of every description and bedding plants galore.

Last year’s event raised a record £10,000, divided between the village hall, Denton School Fund and St Andrews Church, which was open all day with peaceful organ recitals.

For one weekend all attention focuses on Denton’s Church Street, Park Lane, St Andrews Church, school and an area of parkland paddock, with a large car park thanks to the Denton Farming Company.

Additional attractions include an art exhibition in the church and schoolchildren performing traditional Maypole dancing in the playground.

Residents run their own stalls amidst the 100+ traders, school parents produce and sell food and the village hall stages a day-long tea-and-cake fest.

This year organisers have called on the public to use Denton’s large central car park provided or to park sensibly on village approach roads, days Debbie Nicholls, one of the market organisers.

Shhe said: “Our street market is an extremely popular event and we are grateful for public support, but would make a plea for people to use their heads when they park. Either use our car park or please do your best to get all cars off the public highway on the roads into Denton.”
