Diamond wedding celebrations for Grantham couple Leonard and Joan

Teenage sweethearts Joan and Leonard Marriott celebrate 60 years of a happy marriage today (Thursday).
Joan was aged just 14 and Leonard 15 when they met in North Lincolnshire as their fathers both worked on an estate. They fell for one another and Joan followed Leonard to Stoke Rochford when he took a job on the estate there.
The pair were married on January 3, 1953, at Stoke Rochford by the then Bishop of Grantham. A reception at home followed with immediate family and friends invited to share in their special day.
The newly-weds moved to Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir when Leonard started work on the Belvoir estate. He remained there for 26 years before the couple decided to buy a home in Buckminster Gardens, Grantham, where they remain today.
Leonard worked at BMARC for 16 years while Joan took a job as a special cutter for Bridal Fashion, which was located in London Road. She worked there for 22 years, while Leonard went on to work for Ford on Spittlegate Level from where he retired.
The couple went on to have two sons, Paul and Philip, and welcomed granddaughters Karina, Katherine and Sarah into the family.
Caravanning is a passion they both share, while Leonard is keen on DIY and Joan enjoys making greeting cards, raising money for a cancer charity and the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, and playing badminton.
Leonard took a few words of wisdom from the Bishop of Grantham when they were married which he attributes to their successful union.
He said: “Like the Reverend told us, never go to bed with a quarrel.”
Joan added: “I’d say work as a partnership really. And know that you’re the boss!”
Leonard and Joan will celebrate their diamond wedding on Saturday with family and friends at The Recruiting Sergeant in Great Gonerby.
