Children at West Grantham Academy St John’s were treated to a day at the beach - without even leaving school.

Yesterday three tonnes of sand were brought into the playground, while pupils could also splash about in paddling pools and even ride one of four donkeys.

Principal Zara Harrington said: “Many of the children have never been to the beach, as it is quite a long way from here, so we decided to bring the beach to them.”

Students were also treated to seaside classics including ice creams, chip cones and sticks of rock in the school’s colours.

However it was the donkeys which had been brought over from Wales that proved the most popular, including with 9-year-old Dakoda Gray who said: “Riding the donkey was my favourite - it was really fun. My one was called Dennis.”
