Golden Wedding : Terry and Beryl Pulfrey.

A COUPLE who met at a dance in Allington in 1954 are celebrating their Golden Wedding anniversary today.

Terry and Beryl Pulfrey, of High Meadow, Grantham, say they would enjoy another 50 years together.

Terry, 73, said: “I wouldn’t change anything. Love and respect goes a long way.”

When they met Beryl was a 17-year-old hairdresser and 19-year-old Terry, whose father ran the Oddfellows pub in Grantham, worked as an apprentice at Aveling Barford.

Beryl, 71, said: “We used to go dancing at Allington Village Hall on Saturday nights with friends.

“It wasn’t really love at first sight we were just friends at first and it progressed from there.”

After they met they dated for four years before deciding to tie the knot at Allington Church.

They had their reception where they first met at Allington Village Hall before going to London on honeymoon.

While they were engaged they started their first major project together.

Terry said: “We built our own house to move into after we got married at Elm Grove.

“It was ready in time for the wedding.”

They lived happily in the Grantham area until the 1980s when Terry was made redundant from his job at Aveling Barford after 30 years.

They then moved to South Africa with their two daughters.

Terry said: “Beryl’s sister lived out there and they told us to come out there so we did.

“It was different to here. It was interesting and a great experience and an adventure.

“The weather was definitely better.”

Both of their daughters got married during the 15 years that they lived in South Africa and the couple have five grandchildren and now one great-grandchild.

In 1999 Beryl and Terry decided to follow their daughters back to Grantham where they have lived ever since.

Terry said: “We’ve always classed Grantham as home.”
