Grantham Canal Society appeals for help to continue its canal restoration work
GRANTHAM Canal Society (GCS) has launched an appeal to fund the refurbishment of a dredger to continue its vital restoration work on the 33 miles of canal that runs from Nottingham through the Vale of Belvoir to Grantham.
The 35ft, 15 tonne dredger, called Mudlark, has been acquired from British Waterways, the Government agency which recently became the English Canals and Waterways Trust.
The society needs to raise £6,000 to refurbish the dredger.
Chairman Mike Stone said: “We have been able to negotiate the purchase of the dredger, Mudlark, from British Waterways, but our work doesn’t stop there. We need to move it, restore it to working order, paint and commission it.
“Volunteer labour will be used throughout. This is a much needed and vital piece of equipment which will be a huge asset in helping us to achieve our long-term objective of restoring the canal to its former glory as a fully navigable waterway.
“We are most grateful to British Waterways for their support throughout the purchase of Mudlark. British Waterways are happy for the dredger to stay on the Grantham Canal because it will continue to support their restoration objectives.
“We have always had great support from local communities, our volunteers and the many groups and individuals who love their canal, so we are hoping that once again they will dig deep and support our appeal.
“However, there are some excellent and high value opportunities for local businesses to sponsor elements such as new hydraulic rams, paint, and fluid for hydraulics. We are actively campaigning to attract their interest.”
