A former heroin addict stole a perfume gift set from Boots to pay off a debt.

Benjamin Noddings, 33, of Back Lane, Ingoldsby, admitted stealing the gift worth £48.50 on December 6 when he appeared before Grantham magistrates.

Prosecutor Marie Stace told the court that Noddings put the gift set into a plastic bag and walked out of the store. He was followed by security into the High Street and taken back to the store. He fully admitted making no attempt to pay for the perfume when interviewed by police. He said he was in debt to another man and owed £50.

Rory Macmillan, defending, said Noddings was a single man with a three-year-old daughter. He was a former heroin addict and came out of prison in 2010. Mr Macmillan said: “He does not want to get into this position again. He sees his daughter every week in Grantham.”

Magistrates handed Noddings an 18-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay costs of £40 and a victim surcharge of £15.
