A man burgled a café in Grantham and stole alcohol, soft drinks and a coffee machine just weeks after being released from prison.
Pasquale Rizzo, 34, of Avenue Road, Grantham, admitted the burglary of the 7 Café in Blue Court on February 7 when he appeared in custody before Grantham magistrates. He also stole an iPhone as part of the haul which was valued at £800.
Prosecuting, Marie Stace told Grantham Magistrates Court that Rizzo broke a window of the café and stole bottles of alcohol, soft drinks, the coffee machine and the phone, going back over four hours to steal the items. He was identified on CCTV and later arrested.
The value of the goods recovered was £50. The coffee machine was found with its cable cut.
Defending, Jane Bauer said Rizzo had been in Grantham for eight years, but only at his current address for five weeks since leaving prison.
He had had difficulty adjusting to life outside prison and it had been a “very sobering experience”.
Miss Bauer said her client was feeling “hopeless and helpless”. He started drinking and then went out to find more. She said the burglary was “unplanned and unsophisticated”.
The court was told that Rizzo was sent to prison in December and he had not complied with community orders in the past.
The magistrates handed Rizzo an eight week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £80 but no costs because of his financial situation.
