Empire Designerwear was named Independent Retailer of the Year at the Grantham Journal Business Awards.
The store has been trading for 16 years, and while originally based on the High Street, its growing popularity enabled a relocation to its current, bigger premises on St Peters Hill.
Customers can find menswear and children’s footwear on the ground floor and ladieswear on the first, with a range of brands to suit all ages and budgets.
Owner Chad Vinodchadda spoke to the Journal about the shop’s success.
What did it mean to win?
Following lots of hard work, passion and dedication by all our staff, this is the perfect acknowledgement. Customer satisfaction and the provision of a unique shopping experience has made customers want to return. The determination to increase our customer base both inside and outside of Grantham when all are yelling economic doom for the retail sector is an incredible feat in itself. To be recognized for our independent status in Grantham is the perfect motivation to drive us forward for another 16 years!
What products can shoppers expect to find?
Empire Designerwear is Grantham’s hub of fashion for designer brands. We sell styles direct from the catwalk, the latest evening wear, to wild street looks. Each day of every week is a new story - customers of all ages with very personal requirements wanting to be served and leave with their own individual perfect look. Whether it is for a dress, shoes, handbag and jewellery, or simply skinny jeans with a T-shirt. Or maybe a new suit, shirt and shoes for an evening out and casual jeans, T-shirt, jumper and trainers for the day. Empire has always tried to offer a diverse range because we recognise the wide group that shop with us. Brands stocked include Diesel, G-Star, Lacoste, Timberland, Superdry, Little Mistress and Glamorous, to name but a few.
Where do you source your products from?
Directly from the designer’s showrooms and fashion catwalks. We also source products that are celebrity inspired such as the Beyonce range. We receive weekly deliveries to ensure we are up-to-date with the latest fashion looks.
How do you think independent retailers are doing?
Independent retailers give the high street a fresh and diverse feel, and offer excellent personal customer service and choice. They are loyal to the town and the customers they serve and will evolve with their customers’ requirements, unlike the multiples that have a one size fits all approach. These have been testing times with the recession and lack of footfall. Grantham is in the same position as other towns in the area, we just need to believe in ourselves and shop locally. As the Grantham Retailers Association reminds us, if everyone spent £5 a week in our town the result would be a thriving town centre with an increasingly excellent choice of shops and services.
