This week is National Volunteers’ Week and leading first aid charity St John Ambulance is calling for more people to join as first aiders.

People in Grantham and across Lincolnshire are being urged to volunteer as a St John Ambulance first aider and help be the difference between a life lost and a life saved in their local community.

A number of opportunities exist for volunteer first aiders to deliver first aid in the community and at public events. Full training and ongoing support will be provided.

The charity is celebrating National Volunteers’ Week by saying a big thank you to its hardworking team of volunteers. With around 38,000 volunteers across the country – and 3,600 across the East Midlands, including 238 in Lincolnshire – they give back to their communities in a range of different ways, from teaching children and young people first aid, to providing vital first aid cover at public events.

Chris Thornton, Regional Director for charity in the East Midlands, said: “Our volunteers are, quite simply, the backbone of our organisation. The time they dedicate to first aid has seen countless lives saved and has helped teach thousands of young people these vital, life saving skills.

“We couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers. Their generosity, dedication, and hard work is vital to ensuring no one should die for a lack of first aid.

“As a St John Ambulance volunteer you can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved. If you’re 18 or over, energetic and committed to putting the needs of others first, volunteering as a first aider with St John Ambulance might be for you. There is lots to do at the local units and we are regularly in attendance at public events ranging from local village fairs, sporting occasions and large county events such as county shows, music concerts and fairs. We’d love to hear from local people interested in joining us as a volunteer first aider.”

St John Ambulance units meet weekly in various locations across Lincolnshire including the Grantham.

Grantham St John Ambulance Unit provides first aid cover at local events including sports and concerts at Grantham Leisure Centre, and Grantham Events Team’s Christmas Market and St George’s Day celebrations.
