Grantham teenager admits inflicting GBH

A teenager burst into a house and repeatedly hit another male, a court heard.

Magistrates heard two different accounts in the case of 18-year-old Jordan Hartley, who pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on December 3.

In the victim’s account read out in court, Hartley called round to a friend of the victim’s house, where he was. His friend said Hartley was outside and wanted to speak to him about a comment he was said to have made the night before, that he had a knife and was going to stab Hartley.

The victim said that after an exchange, Hartley “barged in and laid into me, punching around my head with both fists”. He was hit so many times he head was numb.

The friend’s mother shouted at Hartley to get out, at which point he apologised and left, the court heard. Injured with a fractured jaw, the victim went to the A&E department at Grantham Hospital.

According to the victim, Hartley has “had it in” for him since they met at Grantham College and on one occasion headbutted him. He claimed to have left college over fears of what Hartley would do to him.

However, Rory Macmillan, defending, said a false allegation of assault at the college made against the victim in the case led to Hartley being expelled. He denied any wrongdoing and after CCTV was checked by college staff, Hartley was brought back to his studies and the victim was instead expelled.

Mr Macmillan told magistrates how Hartley had attempted to talk to the victim prior to the assault on December 3 but became angry when the victim started laughing at him and lashed out.

Mr Macmillan added: “Mr Hartley says he regrets his actions.”

The case was adjourned until January 21 pending the completion of a full pre-sentence report by the Probation Service.

Magistrates told Hartley that all options remain open, including prison.

Hartley, of Kestrel Court in Grantham, was granted bail on the condition he does not contact three named persons.
