Jane swaps her police hat for cycling helmet
Grantham Pc Jane Ellis will raise money for charity.
A POLICING beat manager is taking on a charity cycle challenge to battle breast, ovarian and cervical cancer.
Pc Jane Ellis, 48, of Sudbrook, is joining a group of women tackling the third Women V Cancer challenge. They will form a women-only team of cyclists riding through Cuba to support three charities: Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action. A donation will also be made to support cancer care in Cuba.
Women of all ages and all cycling abilities from across the UK will be taking part in the five-day challenge in October 2013. The trek will cover 400 kilometres, starting in Havana and travelling to Trinidad, both on- and off-road.
Jane, who is the beat manager for Grantham town centre, said that her inspiration for this task comes from seeing friends affected by breast and ovarian cancer. She added that she felt “spurred on” to help and that the personal challenge was extra motivation.
However, this is not the start of her fund-raising. In August, she released 200 pink balloons from Syston Park Fruit Farm near Grantham, offering a £50 meal to the winner whose balloon travelled furthest. The winner’s balloon landed in Jyvaskyla, Finland, and they were notified a month after it was originally let go.

Before the cycle challenge, Jane has a number of other fund-raising events planned, including a lasagne supper evening on October 20 as well as hosting a coffee morning at her home in December.
She has also planned another balloon release at Easter next year where 500 balloons will be let go, with £100 for the winner. In addition to these, Jane has also been selling broaches through Grantham Beauty Clinic, in Vine Street, where they have made £100 so far, bringing her current total to £830.
