M&S closure - company bosses to meet council on Tuesday
BOSSES at Marks & Spencer are to meet with the district council this week to discuss the future of the business in Grantham.
Marks & Spencer announced on Thursday (July 22) it plans to close it store in Grantham, along with stores in Skegness, Nuneaton and Scunthorpe.
Management at Marks & Spencer will meet South Kesteven District Council representatives on Tuesday (July 27).
Similar meetings have also been planned with councils in Nuneaton, Skegness and Scunthorpe. The Nuneaton meeting will also be held on Tuesday.
Were the store to close, the district council plans to work with the Job Centre to help the 45 staff members affected.
Discussions are also planned with town centre landlords to see what more can be done to promote business in Grantham.
A SKDC spokesman said: “Obviously nobody wants to see any key high street retail unit empty and we would expect to work closely with the landlord to promote the site.”
Grantham MP Nick Boles is planning to meet with town centre land owners to discuss the town’s economic problems.

Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 04:30 PMI really cannot see the point of a meeting between the council and M&S, if the latter are running a no profit store then common sense will cause it to close. Perhaps all the people who write to say that M&S should stay open should start to shop at the store. However I for one do not use the store I find it quite unattractive so perhaps I am partly to blame for its futre demise. If the council intend to plough cash into the ailing store I for one would object strongly
