Mandy George who survived malaria 15 months ago, has recounted her experiences on day 4 of her challenge to live on just £1 a day in order to raise money for Malaria No More UK.
Mandy’s five days of living on a limited budget comes ahead of the national Live Below the Line week taking place between April 28 and May 2.
She hopes that by trying it out and keeping a daily diary, she will prove that anyone can do it and encourage others to have a go themselves.

Day 4: 03/04/14
No more porridge!!! That was the first thing that crossed my mind as a I woke up this morning. So the day began with a twist: an omelette with diced onion, potato, spinach and mixed herbs. Delicious. Normally I would have eaten this with toast, but that is not in my budget. Lunch was easy: left over butter bean tomato sauce from Tuesday with a large serving of pasta. I’ve been rationing my servings so far and now on day 4 I realise that against all expectations, I have plenty of the staples left. Dinner will be a simple stir fry of left over rice with vegetables. Tonight is going to be a test of my will power: I’m going out to a concert for my brother’s birthday but of course can only drink tap water. I’m lucky that I don’t have to live on £1 for everything like those who are really living below the line – or the concert would be a no go. Feeling fortunate!
